Quick Tips for Parents

Afraid of the Dark?

Afraid of the Dark?

First, know that these fears typically pass in a couple of weeks or months - This too shall pass.

Teasing, even humorously, can make your child feel like they can't trust you with their fears

Your child's imagination is clearly brimming when they have a fear of the dark. Use this creativity to help them imagine a protector who makes them feel safe.

A nightlight that your child loves, or even a dimmer can help ease their fears and give them a sense of control over when they want to turn it off.

If your child wakes up in the middle of the night, resist the temptation to bring him into your room. This sends the message that he really is not safe alone in his room. Instead, go to him to reassure him that the monsters aren’t real.
