Class Description: A 5 week class (2 hours per week for 5 weeks) for parents of children 12-17 years of age. This curriculum enables parents to increase the chances that their teens will grow up healthy and avoid the risks of drug abuse, violence and other risky teen challenges. Research on this class suggests that parents had significant improvement in family discipline practices and supervision skills and a reduction in family attitudes that encouraged anti-social behavior.
Session Outline:
Week 1: Overview of curriculum and teen development and the parent’s role, risk and protective factors
Week 2: Family meetings, parenting styles, making decisions, solving family problems
Week 3: Communication and managing family conflict, identifying roadblocks, active listening and managing anger
Week 4: Involving teens in family life, setting family policies on health and safety issues
Week 5: People who influence your teen, refusal skills, supervision that maintains strong family bonds. Wrap up based on topics of interest from participating families
